域 - Drawing BOUNDARIES in the Ground with our Spears

Readings & Meanings:

いき

boundary

Common Usage:

地域

空域

Examples:

地域ニュース - Yahoo!ニュース

この辺りは漁業禁止区域だ。

Translations:

Local News - Yahoo News

Fishing is prohibited here.

Bonus:

New radical: 土. Sure, it gets a little warped over there, but the Tsuchi radical is easy to spot: the top horizontal is shorter than the bottom. We know many kanji already with 土:

It's crazy how many we already know with 土. But what the heck is that criss-cross of lines on the right of 域, with a little broken-off piece up top?

It's 戈. It comes from Chinese, of course, and means weapon. Specifically it refers to a halberd or spear with a curved handle. Using Jim Breen, I looked up a few kanji with this radical, and most of them have warlike meanings. Click on a kanji to go to the best web-based Japanese dictionary out there.
