延 - Stop POSTPONING


Readings & Meanings:

Common Usage:

延ばし延ばしにする

延期

Examples:

彼の悪い癖は、やりたくないことを延ばし延ばしにすることだ。(のばしのばしにする)

雨が降ってきたのでスポーツ大会は来週まで延期になった。

Translations:

His bad habit is, the things he doesn't want to do he puts off and off.

Due to the rain that has come, the sports tournament is postponed until next week.

Radical:

There's no excuse for misunderstanding this kanji, if you know your radicals. Not one but TWO components refer to extension.

廴, or Ennyou, is on the left. It depicts a leg extending, approaching an object.

(Be careful. Ennyou [廴] is not Shinnyou [辶], the radical for way/road/path.)

On the right, we have 止, which means to stop.

Just above it we have 丿, another extension pictograph, this time of an arm extending to reach out.

Extend, stop, and extend, a kanji palindrome of procrastination and postponement.
